Building Product Roadmaps
Roadmaps are an output, not the starting point.
Product roadmaps definitely generate a lot of emotion from product managers, internal stakeholders, and customers. Sometimes it’s excitement, many times it’s frustration. Done well they can be excellent communications tools both internally and externally. Done poorly the can set the organization up to fail or to focus on the wrong things.
The root of the problem is typically that people try to start with a roadmap that lists solutions, and then they get really focused about delivering a thing by a date. The hard work in product management is understanding who you are building for, why they care about it, and how it will help your business. Coming up with the solution and a project timeline are the last two steps, yet those are the two that get emphasized in most roadmaps.
Petersen Product Strategy can help you and your team not only ask the right questions up front to get to a solid roadmap, but also provide specific guidance on roadmap format that will keep everyone focused on what matters.
