Building Empowered Product Teams

Provide them the context to be autonomous, empowerment will follow.

The notion of building an empowered product team, where the team is free to set it’s direction within some guardrails and follow customer needs wherever they may lead is very popular at the moment. Where a lot of companies struggle however is that they try to jump to empowered without asking if the teams have what they need to be autonomous.

Being “empowered” implies autonomy because the team should be aware enough of the company and product strategy, business targets, and key metrics that they don’t need to frequently check in with senior management to ask for clarification or guidance, nor to ask for permission. They are free to operate within the strategy and goals that have been set. If all of this context does not exist, or is not well understood and documents, these teams will solve real customer problems, but may be disconnected from business realities.
